Neck Bone Pillow
Have you ever made a neck bone pillow? They are the kind that are shaped like a dog bone, and are for behind your neck. They are very convenient for traveling. A friend showed me how to make them in college. I eventually made a ton of them for traveling members of a college singing group.
Neck Bone Pillow Before
I think these pillows are a great way to use up fabric scraps. You need three pieces that are bone shaped. You can make all three pieces out of the same fabric, or use 2 or 3 coordinating fabrics. I like to use coordinating fabrics to make the pillow more interesting.
You can cut the bone shape out with a Cricut machine if you have one, or by hand. Click on this Link to use my Cricut pattern. Click on this Link for a pattern you can print and cut by hand. (Enlarge this pattern so that it measures approximately 16.5 inches long by 8.5 inches wide at the widest part.)
I created a video to show you how this travel neck bone pillow is sewn.
Sew two pieces right sides together, half way around the bone shape lengthwise.
Then unfold the two pieces. Add the third piece on top, and sew again around the bone shape lengthwise.
The third (and last) time you sew around, leave the middle section open for turning the pillow right side out to stuff it.
Hand stitch the opening closed.
I thought you could see the stitches a little easier on this pink floral neck bone pillow that I made.
Here is a video showing exactly how to hand sew a stuffed pillow closed.
To finish sewing the stuffing opening closed, tie two knots. Before you cut off the end, insert the sewing needle inside and away from your seam.
Pull the needle through and cut off the thread. Now the tail will be inside your pillow!
The stuffing hole has been sewn closed and the travel pillow is all finished!
I like to use two at a time in the car. Then I can stack them, or put one on its end as I get comfortable for a long nap while my husband drives.
This picture shows the end of the pillow– you can see how each piece is only sewn halfway so that they all meet in the center when finished.
These make excellent, thoughtful gifts for anyone who travels alot. They are also great for the elderly or anyone who needs a little neck support. Nearly 20 years ago I made a small one for a baby, at the mother’s request.
I would love to know if you make one of these! Send me a picture so that I can include it here!
This is nice and it seems you can make it as firm or as soft and you like it.
You sure can, Donna! Thanks for stopping by!
What a cool idea! Pinning!

I’m glad you like it! Thanks for stopping by, Michelle!
Those are adorable! The fabric is so cheerful!
Thank you, Amy! Thanks for stopping by!
What a great idea! I’ve never seen these before. I love the fabric you used.
Thank you, Michelle. I’ve seen others that have a holding strap sewn into one end. And I’ve seen them with straps on both ends, to hang them on a rocking chair ready to use. Thanks for stopping by!
