Tent Campfire Cake
For my son’s birthday this year he wanted an outdoor themed tent campfire cake. He has really gotten into outdoorsy type things lately, which makes me happy! As usual, I looked around on Pinterest at other people’s ideas. Then, I combined a few ideas and used my own skill level to create this one of a kind birthday cake!

This isn’t my first campfire themed cake… For more ideas check out my other ones!
Some of the prettiest cakes use fondant— but it’s not my favorite. I’ve tried making my own fondant— and it works, and tastes better– but takes a lot of time. So I like using buttercream frosting.
I started by baking several round cakes and then stacking them. Since it was so many layers tall, I used wooden skewers to help stabilize it, and cut them off.

I envisioned a cozy campfire area– so I cut out a hole for it.

Do those graham crackers look like a tent to you?…… Green chocolate Christmas trees are easy to make— and these are sprinkles with edible blue glitter to elevate the look a bit. Did it work?! And of course– those are marshmallows to roast on the campfire. You could use mini marshmallows but I didn’t have any– what I did have were white chocolate chips, so I attached those to the pretzels with a little bit of frosting.

I didn’t take a lot of in process photos because– it slows me down so much!

It was fun adding the extra little frosting trees everywhere– around the base of the cake, and on the back of the mountain/ hill. (The little frosting trees hid the white part of the lollipop stick in the green chocolate trees.)
Oh, and those are Pirouline wafer logs in the campfire. I’ve said it before I think– Pirouline are the only wafer logs made in the USA. All others (that I’ve ever found) are made in a different country. I do like my food from the USA– and if you’re reading this from a different country I suppose you like your food too!

The important things about this outdoor birthday cake were that my son liked it and that it tasted good. Those are my goals for a themed birthday cake.

Here is the side of the cake.

And here is the back.

I do wish I could share a piece with you– but these pictures will have to do!

Do you make cakes for anyone? What is the favorite one you’ve made? I’d love to know!

Well, it’s hard to cut a cake like this and still have it look pretty. This cake didn’t last very long!
